Shravan Maas or month is a sacred month in the Hindu religion where people seek blessings of Lord Shiva and Goddess Gauri by observing fast, also known as Vrat. People celebrate 16 Somvar Vrat and Mangala Gauri Vrat during this month.

Married women observe fast to celebrate the auspicious occasion of Mangala Gauri Vrat to get blessings in their marital life. The Vrat is observed every Tuesday in the month of Shravan. In North India, Shravan month is also known as Saawan month.

North Indian states like Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand normally follow the Purnimant calendar. In these regions, Shravan month starts 15 days prior to the Amanta calendar that is followed in the states like Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.

You need these items to perform Mangala Gauri Vrat Pooja:

  1. An idol of Goddess Gauri or Parvati Devi or 5 small pyramids made of turmeric powder
  2. Kalash
  3. Jaggery
  4. Rice
  5. Cotton or flower mala
  6. Red flowers
  7. Fresh coconut – broken in half
  8. Cloth folded in form of pyramid
  9. Fruits

Women deck up traditionally and get adorned with bangles, mangalsutra, vermilion or sindoor, and flowers. They should perform these rituals in sequential order: Maa Mangala Gauri avahan, Ganesha avahan mantra, avahan mantra for all Gods and Goddesses, Goddess Gauri story and arti, dhyaan, pushpanjali. A pooja dedicated to Parvati Devi is performed on Tuesday of Shravan month. This helps married women gain blessings of the Goddess to maintain bliss in their household.

Mangala Gauri Katha or Story

Long ago there was a wealthy merchant named Dharampal who had a beautiful wife. But the void of not having children made them sad. By performing several poojas they received God’s grace as their son was born. However, he was cursed to die from snakebite before he reached the age of 16. Fortunately, he got married before turning 16 and was saved due to his wife’s mother who had performed rituals of Mangala Gauri Vrat. The girl’s mother was blessed with a daughter who could never be a widow. Hence, Dharampal’s son was blessed with a life of 100 years. Similarly, all women observe this Vrat, to get blessings for their husbands with longevity and good health.
