Like Raksha Bandhan, the festival of Bhai Dooj, which falls on the second day after Diwali, celebrates the love between a brother and a sister. On this day the sister prays for the brother’s long life, health and prosperity, while the brother gives his sister gifts which she wishes for. The festival is also known as Bhai Tika in Nepal, Bhai Phonta in Bengal and Bhau Beej in Maharashtra. This year Bhai Dooj falls on November 14, 2023. According to mythology, this is the day when Lord Krishna went to meet his sister Subhadra after killing the demon Narkasur. Subhadra gave him a warm welcome, did his aarti and applied tilak on his forehead. Relationships are most dear to most of us. But to make our family members happy, we need money. There are quite a few mythological stories about Bhai Dooj festival. The most famous one is that once the Sun God Surya married a girl called Samjna, who bore him twins who were named Yama and Varni. But soon Samjna found the sun’s heat unbearable, and left for earth, leaving behind her shadow called Chhaya so that the Sun God would feel sher was still there. Soon Chhaya too had her own children and started ill-treating Yama and Varni. Fed up with this, Varni came down to earth to become the river Yamuna, and Yama went to the underworld and became the god of death. After some years, they began to miss each other, and Yama decided to visit Varni, who was so overjoyed that she prepared a big feast to welcome her brother. Later, when Yama was about to leave he asked his sister to make a wish as he wanted to gift her something. Varni, claiming that she had everything she needed, said she wished that on this day, which was the second day after Diwali, all brothers should visit their sisters, and sisters should pray for their brothers’ happiness.
